The nights are drawing in, the mornings are getting cooler and autumn has definitely arrived.
For many of us, that means swapping lighter duvets for warmer bedding, reaching for the cosy throws and making the bedroom feel a little more inviting.
But did you know that the change of season can affect how well you sleep too?
At Bedtime Bed Centre, we've been helping people find a better night's sleep for over 30 years. Here are our simple tips for sleeping comfortably as we head through autumn and into winter.
1. Keep Your Bedroom Cool - But Not Cold
It can be tempting to turn the heating right up as soon as the temperature drops, but an overly warm bedroom isn't necessarily better for sleep.
Your body naturally cools as it prepares for sleep, so a bedroom that feels comfortably cool can help create the right environment for rest.
Rather than overheating the whole room, concentrate on creating a comfortable sleeping environment with suitable bedding and a mattress made from breathable materials.

2. Think About What's Inside Your Mattress
When choosing a new mattress, it's easy to focus mainly on whether it feels firm or soft. But what's inside your mattress can make a real difference to how comfortable you feel throughout the night.
Natural fillings such as wool, alpaca and camel hair have been used in quality mattresses for generations. These natural fibres have excellent insulating and moisture-regulating properties, helping to keep you warm and cosy during colder nights while remaining breathable.
Wool is particularly clever. Rather than simply trapping heat, it helps regulate temperature and manage moisture, making mattresses containing wool a great choice throughout the changing seasons.
If you love that warm, cosy feeling as we head into autumn and winter, it's well worth looking at what's actually inside your mattress.
Our Autumn Pick: Camel Hair Mattress
For a luxurious natural option, our Camel Hair Mattress is one of our favourite choices as the weather gets colder.
Camel hair is naturally insulating and breathable, helping to create a warm and comfortable sleeping environment without simply trapping heat. Combined with quality natural fillings and pocket springs, it's a lovely choice for anyone looking for traditional comfort with excellent temperature regulation.

Another Autumn Favourite: Alpaca Mattress
Our Alpaca Mattress is another beautiful choice for the cooler months, particularly if you love the feel of luxurious natural materials.
Alpaca fibre is naturally insulating while remaining breathable, helping to create a comfortable sleeping environment as temperatures change. Combined with pocket springs and carefully selected fillings, it offers a wonderfully luxurious feel with the natural benefits you'd expect from a premium mattress.

3. Give Your Mattress a Little Autumn TLC
The change of season is a great reminder to give your mattress a little attention too.
Check whether your mattress is due to be rotated. Regular rotation can help the fillings settle more evenly and reduce excessive wear in the areas where you sleep most often.
Not every mattress is the same, though. Some are rotate-only, while others are designed to be turned as well, so always follow the care instructions supplied with your mattress.
It's also important to let your mattress breathe. As the weather gets colder, we're more likely to close the windows and turn the heating on, but good ventilation still matters. Pull your duvet back in the morning for a while and allow moisture from overnight to escape.

4. Layer Up Your Bed, Not Your Heating
As the temperature starts to drop, it can be tempting to turn the heating up and leave it running all night. But a bedroom that is too warm can make it harder to sleep comfortably.
Instead, think in layers. Breathable sheets, your usual duvet and a throw or blanket on top give you much more control as autumn nights become colder. If you get too warm during the night, you can simply remove a layer.
This is another reason we love natural mattress fillings. Materials such as wool can help regulate temperature and manage moisture, rather than simply trapping heat around your body.
So when you're choosing a new mattress, don't just ask how firm it is – ask what's inside it too.

5. Use the Darker Evenings to Reset Your Sleep Routine
One of the nicest things about autumn is that evenings naturally begin to slow down. As the nights draw in, it's a great opportunity to rethink your bedtime routine and create a calmer end to the day.
Try dimming the lights in the evening, giving yourself time to wind down and keeping your sleeping and waking times reasonably consistent.
And if you're spending plenty of time in bed but regularly waking uncomfortable, stiff or struggling to settle, don't automatically assume poor sleep is something you simply have to put up with.
Your mattress may no longer be providing the comfort and support that's right for you.

Ready for a Cosier Night's Sleep This Autumn?
As the nights get colder, a few simple changes can make your bedroom feel warmer, calmer and much more inviting.
But if your mattress is uncomfortable, worn out or simply no longer right for you, no amount of cosy bedding will completely solve the problem.
When choosing your next mattress, remember to look beyond just firmness. Ask what's inside it. Natural fillings such as wool, alpaca and camel hair can offer wonderful comfort, breathability and natural insulation throughout the changing seasons.
