How Often Should I Replace My Mattress?
How Often Should I Replace My Mattress?
A good mattress is one of the most important investments you can make for your health and wellbeing — but how do you know when it's time for a new one? At Bedtime Bed Centre, we get asked this question all the time in our showrooms in King's Lynn and Wisbech, so we've put together this guide to help you decide.
The General Rule
Most sleep experts recommend replacing your mattress every 7 to 10 years. However, this can vary depending on the type of mattress, how well it's been cared for, and how much use it gets.
Signs It's Time to Replace Your Mattress
- You wake up with aches and pains — particularly in your back, neck or hips
- Visible sagging or lumps — if your mattress has lost its shape, it's no longer supporting you properly. Body impressions are normal, but dipping is not.
- You sleep better elsewhere — if you sleep better in a hotel or at a friend's house, your mattress may be to blame
- Increased allergies or asthma — older mattresses can harbour dust mites and allergens
- Noisy springs — creaking or squeaking is a sign the internal structure is wearing out
- Your lifestyle has changed — a new partner, weight change, or pregnancy can all affect what support you need
Mattress Lifespan by Type
- Open coil mattresses: 1–5 years
- Pocket sprung mattresses: 5-10 years
- Memory foam mattresses: 3-7 years (no springs)
- Hybrid mattresses: 5-10 years
- Natural/latex mattresses: 5-10 years
Honestly, these figures are a guide only. Every sleeper is different — for example, a heavier adult sleeping on the most basic open coil mattress may find it wears out in as little as a year. The lifespan of any mattress depends on a combination of factors: your body weight, how regularly you rotate or turn it, and simply how much use it gets. The heavier you are and the longer you use it without care, the quicker it will wear. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for turning or rotating your mattress — it really does make a difference.
How to Make Your Mattress Last Longer
- Use a good quality mattress protector from day one
- Rotate your mattress every month (and flip if it's double-sided)
- Ensure your bed frame provides adequate support
- Air your mattress regularly by pulling back the covers each morning
- Don’t sit on the edge of your mattress — repeatedly sitting in the same spot puts concentrated pressure on the springs and foam, causing it to break down much faster
Frequently Asked Questions
My mattress is stained — should I get a new one?
Not necessarily. Stains alone don’t mean a mattress needs replacing — if it’s still comfortable and supportive, a good clean may be all it needs. However, if the staining is severe, has caused odours that won’t shift, or the mattress is already showing signs of wear, it’s probably a good time to start fresh. This is exactly why we always recommend using a mattress protector from day one — it keeps your mattress hygienic and extends its life considerably.
My mattress is 8 years old — should I replace it?
Not necessarily! If it’s still comfortable, supportive, and you’re waking up feeling well-rested — don’t replace it just because of its age. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it! The 7–10 year guideline is exactly that — a guideline. The real question is how it feels. If you’re starting to notice aches, dipping, or restless nights, then yes, it’s probably time. But if you’re sleeping well and it still feels great, there’s no rush.
I slept better on holiday — does that mean I need a new mattress?
It’s one of the most common things we hear! If you consistently sleep better away from home — whether in a hotel, at a friend’s house, or on holiday — it’s a strong sign that your mattress at home may no longer be doing its job. Hotels typically invest in high-quality, well-supported mattresses that are replaced regularly, so if theirs feels noticeably better than yours, it could be time for an upgrade. That said, it’s also worth bearing in mind that you’re usually far more relaxed on holiday — no work stress, no early alarms, no daily worries — and that alone can make a huge difference to how well you sleep. So before you rush out and buy a new mattress, ask yourself: do you sleep well at home when you’re relaxed and well-rested? If the answer is yes, your mattress might be just fine.
Can I just flip my mattress instead of replacing it?
Turning or rotating your mattress is something you should be doing regularly anyway — ideally every month. Not only does it help even out wear, but failing to do so can actually void your mattress guarantee, so it’s really important to keep on top of it. Check whether your mattress is single or double-sided first, as not all can be flipped — but all should be rotated.
If you’ve not been turning or rotating your mattress and it’s now showing signs of wear, starting now will help — but be honest with yourself: if the damage is already done, it may be too late to reverse it. A mattress that has been neglected and is already sagging or uncomfortable is unlikely to recover, no matter how diligently you rotate it from here on. In that case, it’s time for a new one.
Does a new bed frame mean I need a new mattress too?
Not always, but it’s worth considering. If your mattress is already several years old and you’re investing in a new bed frame, it makes sense to replace both at the same time — a new frame with an old, worn mattress won’t give you the sleep quality you’re hoping for. It’s also worth checking that your existing mattress is compatible with your new frame, particularly if you’re switching to a slatted base or an ottoman.
