❓ Frequently Asked Questions
🔊 Do bed frames squeak?
A well-made bed frame that's assembled correctly shouldn't squeak. Over time, however, bolts can loosen with normal use — so checking the fixings every six months should help keep it quiet.
🪵 Do wooden slats break?
They can, particularly on lower quality frames or if they receive excessive point loading. Replacement slats are usually inexpensive and easy to fit.
🛏️ Do bed frames provide good mattress support?
Yes — a slatted bed frame provides excellent support for your mattress, as long as the slats are evenly spaced with gaps no bigger than 10cm. Wider gaps can cause the mattress to sag between slats over time. It's also worth noting that sprung slatted bases may make the mattress feel a little softer, depending on the quality of the mattress — something to bear in mind if you prefer a firmer feel.
⭐ Are there different qualities of bed base?
Yes. Our standard divan base is suitable for everyday use for most people, but we also offer stronger bases with solid sides and extra-reinforced bases for super strength. If you have any concerns, just ask — we'll point you in the right direction.
💪 What type of divan base gives the best mattress support?
For the firmest, most consistent support, a solid platform top divan is ideal — it should be completely flat with no dips or waves. Divan bases with springs also need to be free from dips or waves, but do bear in mind that a sprung base will make the mattress feel softer. If you prefer a firmer feel, ask for the latest firm edge sprung divan — the sides are stronger, which helps maintain the shape and support of both the base and your mattress. 🧰 Why do the drawers always break on my divan base?
Sometimes this can be a manufacturing fault, but to be honest it's normally because they've been overfilled. Divan drawers are only suitable for lighter items like bedding and clothes. If you want to store more substantial things, you'd be better looking at a bed frame or an ottoman divan base — which gives you much more usable storage space.
🌬️ Does a mattress breathe better on a bed frame?
Yes — slatted bases do allow more airflow to the mattress. That said, a divan base is more than suitable as long as you turn or rotate your mattress regularly and air it out. A frame would be worth considering if airflow is a particular concern in your bedroom.
💪 What's best for a heavier person?
We'd recommend either a reinforced divan base or a bed frame — some of which are guaranteed to support up to 40 stone. If you're unsure which is right for you, come in and speak to us — we'll make sure you get something that's built to last.
The best choice isn't about whether a divan base or bed frame is "better" — it's about whether you value practicality or style more. Both can be excellent investments when you choose a quality product. Still weighing up your options? Our Which Mattress is Right for Me? guide is a good next step.
