Every summer, we hear the same question in our showrooms: "What's the best mattress for keeping me cool?" It's a completely understandable thing to ask ā especially after a few nights of broken sleep in the heat. But the honest answer might surprise you.
There isn't one magical mattress that keeps everyone cool. Your body temperature, your bedding, your bedroom temperature, and the materials inside your mattress all play a part. However, some mattresses are far more breathable than others ā and understanding the difference could mean sleeping much more comfortably this summer.

ā There Is No "Best" Cooling Mattress
Before we go any further, it's worth being honest about what a mattress can and can't do:
- No mattress can actively cool your body ā the aim is better airflow and less heat retention, not making you cold
- Your duvet, sheets, and bedroom temperature actually have a much greater impact on how hot you sleep than your mattress alone
- What works brilliantly for one person may feel completely different for another ā because we all sleep differently
That said, choosing a more breathable mattress with lower heat retention can make a genuine, noticeable difference ā particularly if you already run warm or tend to sweat during the night.
š”ļø Why Do Some Mattresses Feel Hotter Than Others?
It comes down to airflow and heat absorption. A mattress that traps warm air close to your body will feel hotter ā regardless of the season. The key factors are:
- The materials inside ā some fillings absorb and retain heat, others wick moisture and allow air to circulate
- The structure of the mattress ā open spring systems allow more airflow than solid foam cores
- The depth of the comfort layers ā thicker foam layers can create more of a "heat trap" effect

š¤ Does Memory Foam Make You Hot?
Memory foam has a reputation for sleeping hot ā and in its earlier forms, that reputation was deserved. Traditional memory foam is a dense, closed-cell material that responds to body heat, which means it can absorb and retain warmth rather than allowing it to dissipate.
Modern memory foam has improved considerably. Many mattresses now use open-cell foam structures, gel infusions, or breathable cover fabrics designed to improve airflow. But if you know you sleep warm, it's still worth being cautious ā and always worth trying in our showroom before you commit.
The bottom line: memory foam isn't automatically a bad choice for hot sleepers, but it requires more careful selection than a pocket sprung or natural fill mattress.
š§ Are Cooling Gel Mattresses Worth It?
Gel-infused foam mattresses are marketed heavily as a solution for hot sleepers ā and they do offer some genuine benefits. Gel beads or layers are designed to absorb and redistribute heat away from the body, rather than letting it build up.
In practice, gel foam tends to sleep cooler than standard memory foam ā but it's not a miracle solution. The gel layer is typically just one component of a multi-layer mattress, and the overall breathability still depends on the full construction. If the gel layer sits beneath several inches of dense foam, the benefit is limited.
Our honest take: gel foam is a worthwhile upgrade over standard memory foam for warm sleepers, but natural fillings and pocket springs often outperform it for breathability overall.
š Pocket Springs vs Memory Foam for Hot Sleepers
Pocket sprung mattresses have a natural advantage when it comes to temperature regulation. Because each spring sits in its own fabric pocket with air around it, there's inherent airflow built into the structure of the mattress. Heat can escape rather than being trapped.
Combine a pocket spring unit with breathable natural fillings, and you have a mattress that's genuinely well-suited to warmer sleepers ā without any special "cooling" marketing required.

šæ Natural Fillings: The Unsung Heroes for Hot Sleepers
If you sleep warm, the single most effective upgrade you can make isn't a "cooling" label ā it's the quality and type of natural fillings inside your mattress. Here's an honest breakdown of how each one performs:

š Wool
Wool is one of the oldest and most effective natural temperature regulators known. It works by absorbing moisture vapour from the air around your body ā up to 30% of its own weight ā before releasing it slowly away from the sleeping surface. This wicking action keeps you drier, and a drier sleeping environment feels cooler. Wool also has a natural crimp structure that creates tiny air pockets within the fibre, allowing heat to dissipate rather than build up. It's genuinely effective in both summer and winter ā not just a warm-weather filling.
It's also worth knowing that not all wool fillings are equal. Hand-teased wool ā where the fibres are carefully separated by hand rather than mechanically processed ā is considered the premium standard. The teasing process preserves the natural loft and crimp of the fibre, creating a more open, airy structure that breathes even more effectively. The result is a filling that feels noticeably softer, more responsive, and more breathable than carded wool ā and it's a hallmark of a truly well-made mattress. Our Organic Cotton 3500 Mattress and Organic Cotton 5500 Mattress both feature hand-teased wool alongside their organic cotton fillings ā as do all mattresses in the Norfolk Collection ā
š± Cotton
Cotton is breathable, lightweight, and naturally hypoallergenic. It doesn't regulate temperature as actively as wool, but it absorbs moisture well and dries quickly ā which makes it a good choice for those who sweat lightly during the night. Cotton fillings tend to give a cleaner, firmer feel and are often found layered with other natural materials in mid-range mattresses.
If you'd like to explore cotton-filled mattresses, take a look at our Organic Cotton 3500 Mattress and the Organic Cotton 5500 Mattress ā both use generous layers of organic cotton for a clean, breathable sleeping surface. You can also browse the full Norfolk Collection ā, all of which feature cotton as a key filling.
š Bamboo, Hemp & Flax
Bamboo fibre has become increasingly popular in recent years ā and for good reason. It's exceptionally soft, naturally moisture-wicking, and has a hollow fibre structure that promotes airflow. Bamboo is often blended with other fillings and is particularly effective for those who sweat more heavily during the night. It's also naturally antibacterial, which helps keep the mattress fresher for longer.
Hemp is one of the most breathable natural fibres available ā coarser than bamboo but exceptionally durable and highly effective at wicking moisture away from the body. It has natural thermoregulating properties and becomes softer with use, making it a practical as well as sustainable choice. Hemp is often blended with other natural fillings to add structure and longevity to the comfort layers.
Flax (linen fibre) is derived from the flax plant and shares many of hemp's best qualities ā it's cool to the touch, highly breathable, and absorbs moisture without feeling damp. Flax has a natural crispness that many sleepers find refreshing in warmer months, and it softens beautifully over time. It's a particularly good choice for those who run warm and prefer a cleaner, less cushioned feel. Our Holkham 10200 Mattress and Norfolk Linen 4700 Mattress both make excellent use of these plant-based fibres for a naturally cool, breathable sleeping surface.
šŖ Camel
Camel fibre is one of the lesser-known natural fillings ā but it's remarkable. Camels survive extreme temperature swings in the desert, and their fibre reflects that adaptability. It's hollow at the core, which means it traps air for insulation in cold conditions but also allows moisture to escape efficiently in warmer ones. The result is a filling that genuinely adapts to your body temperature rather than simply insulating it. It's a luxurious, sumptuous feel ā and particularly well suited to those who fluctuate between feeling too hot and too cold. Take a look at our Camel 1200 Mattress ā
š¦ Alpaca
Alpaca is lighter than wool and finer in texture, making it exceptionally soft against the body. Like camel, alpaca fibre is hollow at the core ā giving it excellent thermal regulation properties. It's naturally hypoallergenic (it contains no lanolin), moisture-wicking, and breathable. For hot sleepers who also have sensitive skin or allergies, alpaca is often the ideal choice. It's increasingly found in premium British-made mattresses and is well worth trying if you haven't come across it before. Explore our Alpaca 1200 Mattress ā
⨠Silk & Cashmere
Silk and cashmere are found in the very top tier of natural fill mattresses. Both are exceptionally fine fibres that sit close to the body and feel immediately luxurious. Silk in particular has natural temperature-regulating properties ā it's cool to the touch and breathable, making it a genuine asset for warm sleepers. Cashmere adds softness and a gentle insulating quality. These fillings are typically used in combination with wool or cotton rather than alone, and they contribute to that unmistakable feel of a truly premium mattress. You'll find silk and cashmere fillings across our Norfolk Collection ā
A Note on Filling Weight
When comparing mattresses, it's worth asking about the weight of natural fillings used ā not just what's in there. A mattress described as having "wool fillings" could contain a modest amount as a top layer, or a generous, deep comfort layer that makes a real difference. The more filling, the more effective the temperature regulation ā and the more the mattress will cost. It's one of the clearest indicators of quality.
You can read more about all of these in our Mattress Fillings Explained guide ā
š„ Some People Simply Sleep Hotter ā And That's Normal
It's worth acknowledging that some people are naturally warmer sleepers ā and no mattress will change that entirely. Factors that can make you sleep hotter include:
- Body composition ā higher muscle mass or body weight can mean more heat generated during sleep
- Hormonal changes ā women going through perimenopause or menopause often experience night sweats and hot flushes that can significantly disrupt sleep. A more breathable mattress won't eliminate this, but it can genuinely help reduce discomfort
- Medication ā certain medications can affect body temperature regulation
- Stress and anxiety ā can raise core body temperature during the night
